Thwaites parish is a patchwork of traditional farmland and ancient woods, linked by a network of tiny lanes. Hallthwaites is now a very quiet and peaceful village but was formerly a centre for wool-making and many of the buildings, including “Tenterfield” have their origins from that time. Power was supplied by Black Beck which flows down through the village from the surrounding hills.
The scenery all around is magnificent, from the imposing presence of Black Combe to the silvery Duddon Estuary and wide sandy beaches fringing the coast.
The mild, gulf-stream climate along the coast, ensures that this corner of the Lake District enjoys some of the best weather in the region.
Tenterfield makes a great base from which to start to uncover some of the secrets of this unspoilt Lakeland landscape. Excellent walking can be had straight from the door or with a short drive the quiet fells of Dunnerdale and the Duddon Valley are easily accessible. The impressive Swinside stone circle is well within walking distance and along with the peak of Black Combe which provides spectacular views across the North Country of England, Irish Sea and Solway Firth, is one of the highlights of the area.
The market town of Broughton-in-Furness has a range of interesting small shops and a good choice of eating places with worthy reputations. Millom provides the essentials and has a railway station servicing the Cumbrian coast. Watersports may be enjoyed at Port Haverigg and there is a links golf course at Silecroft which is always welcoming to visitors. The quite lanes are popular with cyclists and horse riders alike, with both conventional pony trekking and the Cumbrian Heavy Horse Centre close by.
Local events include the Millom and Broughton Agricultural Show in August, which features hound trailing, show jumping, Cumberland wrestling and crafts, among other attractions. There are festivals throughout the year celebrating everything from jazz and beer, to scarecrows and maritime history.
