Explore around this region and you will experience some of the most beautiful English landscape to be seen. The valley of Wadale, less than an hour away, is home to Sca Fell Pike, the highest peak in the country set above Wastwater in the rugged Western Lake District. Beside Sca Fell is the mass of Great Gable from which the major valleys of Lakeland radiate in all directions.
But it’s not only the fabulous scenery that attracts visitors to this part of the world. The region has a long history of habitation and occupation. From the times of prehistory and through the Roman Empire the remains of past civilisations can be seen. The influence of the Georgian period is strongly in evidence marking the years when industries began to develop, trading around the world boomed and the English Romantic poets made Lakeland their home . The importance of the sea to the people of the region continued through the Victorian age and still has a part to play today. Throughout all the change, however, the traditional ways of life have endured and have helped to produce this wonderful environment.
